A Chance Encounter
Today I bumped into an old friend, which is not hard to do when you've lived in the same town for over 20 years. In this case, it was someone our daughter went to school with. Someone we exchange Christmas cards with. Someone, at one point, I thought I could take the next step of friendship with, but for some reason or another, it never quite happened that way.
Even today as we were chatting at the entrance to PetSmart I thought about inviting her to get continue the conversation over a cup of tea, but I didn't. As she said "I don't want to hold you up any longer," I didn't reply with "I'd love to keep chatting." I just realized our friendship would always just be a quick catching up on the lives of each other, our spouses, and our daughters until the next time we bumped into each other again.
While that should be enough, I still wish we been able to move to the next stage of friendship.
